Summary
Kurow and Chibi are exploring the Goryeo when their path is blocked by a man who calls himself Benkei the fisherman*. He's been collecting weapons all over Nippon, to the point where he has 999 of them, and he's looking to make his collection a round thousand. And Kurow has what appears to be a flute but Benkei knows it to be a sword, so he won't let them pass until he shows it and gives it to him.
Naturally, Kurow neither confirms nor denies what his flute actually is, but isn't about to give into those demands. While the pair decide, therefore, what to do about getting past Benkei, the Old Sailor comes over and tells Benkei to lay off it already, and that if he really wants to round out his collection, it would be a much better prize to go for the Living Sword, which lives in the purest of waters and can certainly be found in the city. Benkei, intrigued, gives up on Kurow's weapon and decides to go after the Living Sword instead.
After Benkei leaves but before continuing their search, Kurow asks the Old Sailor whether there is, actually, such thing as a Living Sword. The Old Sailor confirms that yes, there is... if you count a cutlassfish. :3
*Pretty sure the fisherman part is a translation error, because he hasn't taken up fishing yet at this point...
What He Learns
☽ There are experts who can tell at a glance that his flute is a sword, then. But no one here has yet, so.
☽ The Living Sword, or the cutlassfish, is a thing that exists.
☽ The Old Sailor is a troll.
Notes
Benkei would later be found in Okami as a roadblock in Sei'An City, trying and failing to fish for his thousandth weapon, the Living Sword. After Amaterasu buys him a better fishing pole and helps him to fish it up, and after he realizes that the cutlassfish isn't actually a weapon, he realizes that he actually likes fishing better than collecting weapons anyway and becomes a fisherman full time.
Also, Musashibou Benkei was a warrior monk who served Minamoto no Yoshitsune. I've mentioned that name before - he's who Kurow and Waka are based on. As it turns out, at one time, he stationed himself on a bridge and fought all passing swordsmen, taking the weapons of those who lost to him, and collected 999 of them. He lost his thousandth such duel, however... to Minamoto no Yoshitsune. So the fact that he and Kurow have a confrontation here amuses me to no end.
